OVERALL JOB PURPOSE: Examine each area of the mine in which miners will be working or traveling. Inspect each area to assure that these areas are made safe and that all State and Federal laws are being observed before the miners begin work. Correct or report any hazardous condition, violation, or potential violation.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:  

• Examine areas of the mine where miners are required to work or travel before each shift (e.g., airways, intakes, returns, belt haulage, track, etc.).
• Ensure Federal, State, and Company regulations are being observed.
• Maintain records of examinations.
• Report any hazardous conditions, violations, potential violations, or unsafe situations to mine management so proper corrective action can be arranged.
• Test for accumulations of methane and oxygen deficiency with appropriate devices during examinations.
• Inspect seals, doors, examine and test the roof, face and ribs on active roadways and travel ways. Document with initials, time, and date at or near each place he/she examines.
• Must display strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

OTHER SKILLS AND EXPECTATIONS:

• Display dependability (promptly meet shift assignments and communicate any work absences to supervisors).
• Productively fulfill 8-12 hour daily shifts and six or seven day overtime workweeks if required.
• Respect the safety-sensitive nature of the underground coal mining industry by maintaining alertness and focus; exhibiting precision and steadiness; executing problem-solving and quick reaction abilities; and abiding to Vesta’s drug and alcohol policies.
• Adjust to various weekday and weekend shifts and mine site locations.
• Respect and tolerate various opinions and personalities and work well in groups.
• Accept constructive criticism from supervisors and respond accordingly.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

• Pennsylvania and/or West Virginia Mine Foreman Certification
• Thorough knowledge of State and Federal Mining Laws

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Working conditions are characteristic of an underground coal mine – exposure to cold, dark, damp, humid, and close confinement environments beneath the earth’s surface.  Due to the labor-intensive makeup of the underground coal mining industry, employees must be able to maneuver in tight spaces and uncomfortable positions, carry a minimum of 80 pounds of weight, and endure strain on the body.

REPORTS TO: Vesta operational coordinator and company mine site supervisor.

FLSA Status: This role is non-exempt and is eligible for overtime compensation.
